RIOT Round Up for November

RIOT Round Up for November

Here is our November update, to share news and just a small snippet of some of the events RIOT members have taken part in. With December bringing our Festive 24, c25k graduation and a number of events, we’re expecting the next blog to be a busy one. However, this will be our last update until the New Year so we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our RIOTers a very good Christmas and New Year.

Committee update

We now have RIOT Buffs for sale, perfect to keep your neck warm or the rain from dripping into your eyes. Thanks to our friends at White Star Running we have managed to get them at a reduced cost and they are available for £4, please order through the website.

A reminder that members can login to the website to view the discount page. We have a number of discounts arranged with businesses from Georgie Porgies to Primrose Kitchen to Running Free, perfect to arrange some Christmas gifts! If you need your membership card please speak to a committee member on a Thursday night run.

Festive 24 starts on the 1st of December! Whether or not you attempt it or finish it, our runners and their friends and family are welcome to join us on the 24th December to support those completing the final run.  The social three mile run will be followed by mince pies and egg or bacon sandwiches at the Rugby Club. We are asking for £5 towards this and will be donating left-over funds to the Rugby Club to thank them for their support to us over the year. Watch out for details of this event on Facebook.

Clare B was announced as the lucky recipient of the club Virgin London Marathon place! Clare, we look forward to watching your training and keeping an eye out for you and the other RIOTers on TV in April.

Don’t forget we do arrange additional Tuesday sessions, these include HIIT training, hill sprints, social runs and intervals. If you haven’t found it yet we have a social Facebook Group this is where we post details of our Tuesday sessions, extra social runs and events.

Dark Valley running

Darkness, rain and forest not a natural combination for running! That didn’t stop the RIOTers who took part in the Dark Valley 10km and Half marathon, we thought you looked great in your fancy dress (even Keith pulled off a tutu!) and big well done to Laura W who got a half marathon PB despite the conditions. Thanks also to the RIOTers who gave up their time to marshall in not the nicest of conditions.

Smuggler Run

It was raining, it was misty and it was a Sunday morning… it was a surprise anyone got out of bed! However the lure of a roast dinner worked its magic as 24 RIOTers and one dog turned up for our social 10 mile run from Dorchester to Osmington. We bumped into cows, stumbled down slopes, up some hills and got a little soggy (but didn’t get lost!). We  finished with birthday cake, birthday balloons and a well-earned roast and pint in the Smugglers at Osmington. Our next social run is on Sunday the 6th January, from Worth Matravers … fingers crossed for some better weather!

Birthday Brecon Ultra

Most of us would celebrate a birthday with a meal out, settle for a slice of cake or maybe indulge in a new pair of running trainers…not many would take part in a hilly 46 mile ultra run in the Brecon Beacons. However that’s exactly what Jase did for his, joined by Bev, together they took on the 46 mile course and were rewarded by some spectacular views, and even some Welsh sunshine! Well done to you both, you continue to inspire us with your big achievements.

Final Time Trial of the year

The final 1 kilometre time trial of 2018 is almost upon us (Thursday 6th December). We have 7 RIOTers eligible for the fidelity award for attending all of our 2018 TT. We also have other awards up for grabs, including biggest % improvers (for those who have take the most time off their TT time),  fastest female (currently top four, in no particular order,  are Alex, Delia, Robin and Laura B) and fastest male (currently between Scott C, Harry and Joe). If you haven’t taken part before, don’t let this put you off, we won’t be resetting times for 2019 so this is a great opportunity for you to set a benchmark to go into the new year!

RIOT Racing!

November was a comparatively quiet month for events but RIOTers still appeared at a number of races, great running by all at Wimborne 10 mile and Boscombe 10k there really were some amazing PBs made. Well done also to Jamie M for a PB at Bideford 10, Sue and Joe for their runs at the beautiful Downton half marathon, Debi for her dark Race to the Romans and all those who took part or got PBs at parkrun and at other events through the month.

RIOT Tourist of the month: This month the prestigious accolade has to got to be awarded to Paul M who ran RIOT in Las Vegas at the Rock n Roll half marathon!
